Sunrise from our hotel room in Kapaa, day one

A waterfall off the highway just out of Kapaa

Wailua falls, a couple miles off the Highway out of Lihue. Worth the trip.

Wiamea Canyon

Close up of the waterfall in Wiamea Canyon

Panoramic view of Wiamea Canyon

Looking over the backside of the island from the end of the road into Kalalau valley. If you look closely there is a hang glider in this picture, about dead center. Later in these pics we see this valley from the ocean below.

Kristen and I at the lookout

Wider angle view of the valley below

Back toward Wiamea canyon

Run Forrest, Run! Watch out for the cliff!

We drove a few miles down a hunting road. From the maps it looks like it goes almost all the way down to the ocean. We turned around before that... it felt like we were in the middle of nowhere.

A funny (altered) sign on the hunting road

Wiamea Canyon close to the Ocean

The town of Wiamea

The "end of the road" at Barking Sands. It's a missle range facility at the southwest side of the island.

Emerging from the ocean after some snorkeling

Sunset from a beach in Poipu

A post dinner nap :)

A Hawaiian slug?

Our oceanfront hotel room for the first couple days

This stick insect was on the front door of the house we stayed at for the remainder of the week. Nice greeting :)

Kristen at the beach at the other end of the road on the north side. Ke`e beach.

Ke`e beach

The start of the hike to Hanakapi beach... it was pretty intense, lots of up and downhill.

These cool plants "close" when you touch them, similar to a venus fly trap. Check out the video!

Part of the trail was littered with tree roots

Looking back towards Ka`a beach

... and forward towards the Napali coast

A chameleon

This millipede crossed our path. It was about 6" long.

Almost to the beach

Apparently lots of folks have died on this beach.

We made it! The beach is located at the end of a river. The ocean water was warm, while the river water quite cold!

Some wild surf at the beach

On the way back, spotted this spider between two trees.

The sign at the trailhead. We only went in 2 miles and turned around. You can go 11 miles in... apparently it's an amazing hike.

Taking photos at the Maniniholo dry cave

And just a bit futher down the road, this is Waikanaloa wet cave

Just outside the wet caves are some vines suitable for climbing :)

I liked the contrast of this lava rock in the beach sand at Haena beach park

An attempt to catch the wave "tunnel"

Sunset at Ha`ena beach

A small gecko in our room. That's my hand.

Taro fields from the lookout point on the highway near Princeville

Taro fields, wide version

Dan and Ellie at Kilauea lighthouse wildlife reserve

The old Kilauea lighthouse

The new Kilauea lighthouse. Not so romantic.

The new lighthouse next to the old one it replaced

Nene birds

View of the coast from Princeville

Hi Katie!

A bodysurfer in the rough waters about to get dumped on

Church at Hanalei

A river near the beach at Hanalei, Black Pot beach park

You could walk out several hundred yards and still be only knee-deep in water. I'm out there somewhere :)

Sun breaks through the overcast

Traditional Hawaiian... exercise? Surfing? We couldn't quite figure it out.

Two young girls going surfing

This outrigger has seen better days

Sun sets at Hanalei Beach

Up close view of the surfing/rowing with a sunset in the background

Dressed up for a nice dinner :)

Time for a cruise to the Napali coast out of Port Allen

Approaching Kalalau valley from the ocean. This is the same valley we looked into from the top canyon

A direct view into Kalalau valley. The lookout point is shrouded in the clouds.

Part of the Napali coast. Gorgeous scenery

The catamaran just kind of idled along the coast with lots of time to sightsee.

One of my favorite pictures. The movie of the same scene gives a better sense of the scale.

A rainbow appears behind us on the return trip to Port Allen.

A muddy waterfall.

Looking back at the Naali coast. A great desktop background :)

We got rained on :)

Apparently the greenery in the foreground is all one large plant

Sunset approaches

One of the many one-lane bridges between the house we stayed in and civilization :)

Views off the highway past Hanalei

A small, extremely detailed shrine in Kapaa.

The house we stayed at, about a mile from the end of the road on the north side of the island

The driveway

Views down the main highway from the end of the driveway

Crossing a one-lane bridge on the way to the airport :(

A great shot from the highway near Hanalei

A grove of palm trees near Kapaa

Group photo on a golf course across the street from the airport

Katie and Dan's airplane about to take off, with our luggage on the ground.

Just after takeoff from Lihue, looking at Nawiliwili

Thanks to the earthquake, there was no power at Hololulu airport

Then the weather rolled in. It was a long day at the airport.

We finally left HNL at about 11pm, 10 hours later than planned.
